Glass Vegas Expo Aims to Change the Game While Other Trade Shows Remain the Same

Love them or hate them, trade shows still play a vital role in the success of any counterculture or cannabis related brand. In the Amazon-age of avoiding human contact as much as possible while ordering as much as you can online, the wholesale side of this multibillion dollar industry still sees essential benefits to the face to face interaction that you get by representing your brand in person at these B2B (Business-to-Business) events.

For too long, the few counterculture trade shows that existed had a hard time gaining traction and respect in the grassroots heady glass community for all sorts of reasons. Some were too “big tent”, allowing Chinese knock-offs to be boothed right next to some of the most talented American functional glass artists in the business. Others claimed to cater to the artist or the buyer, but rarely both, or usually neither.

The rule of thumb for as long as we can remember has been “as long as you break even between the cost to attend vs. the amount of sales/orders you harvest at the show, it’s worthwhile”.

But is that really good enough?

Should we really settle for breaking even?

Hell no! We don’t believe that and neither do the founders and organizers of our favorite heady glass trade show of the year, the Glass Vegas Expo being held this week (January 28th through the 30th) in Las Vegas, Nevada at Bally’s.

With over 500 exhibitors at this year’s show, and thousands of select buyers pouring into the show each day, the Disorderly Conduction crew has their work cut out for them at Booth B1213 but the best part about Glass Vegas is that it hardly feels like work at all!

Today was setup day for us which probably took twice as long as it should have since Glass Vegas is like a Fam Reunion with all of our friends from the tight-knit community of glass collectors and retailers from across the country to convene each year in Sin City to celebrate last year’s successes and plot even larger ones for the year to come.

Even tonight the venue will be packed as SALT hosts an educational talk about the business of glass art and the showroom floor opens from 7pm to 10pm to give the hardcore a chance to put first dibs on the hottest glass art in the world. Tonight, on the main stage (yes, Glass Vegas has a stage!Tow of them, in fact!!), we’ll be treated to the soothing sounds of Trish of HIRIE, Dan Kelly of Fortunate Youth and others to kick off this 3-day banger.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, the hours appear at first glance to be a bit more normal, but there is nothing “normal” about Glass Vegas and that is why we love it!

The showroom floor will be open from 11am until 7pm. During that time the stage will be a cavalcade of some of the finest talent that glassblowing has even known with names like Ethan Windy, Kurt B, AKM and more shredding on the torch for all to see. After we bounce from the showroom, the Millie Meetup Party kicks off from 9pm until… wait for it… 4:20am – we told you this ain’t no Chad-fest!

Thursday’s hours remain the same – 11 to 7 and again, the main stage will be packed with inspiration and the showroom floor will be packed with vendors and buyers looking to end the show with a score.

We really appreciate the ancillary awards, seminars, and entertainment that Glass Vegas offers. For example, the Smoke Shop of the Year Award will go to one lucky store based on:

*Amount of nominations the shop receives *How the shop supports the American Glass industry *How well the shop promotes the artists via shows, social media, etc. *How the shop gives back to the American Glass scene *How the shop supports Glass.Vegas and the artists by attending and purchasing at the show

THAT is how you support and PRESERVE the heady glass culture!

There is a dope bar here onsite and a super chill area outside dubbed the “Backyard” where “safety meetings” can take place in relative privacy.

Of course, one of the main events at Glass Vegas is the Boro Derby

Gentlemen, start your torches!! The Boro Derby is a friendly competition that pits glassblower vs. glassblower in a head to head race between two miniature cars constructed completely out of glass. It may sound like a recipe for a demolition derby, but you may be surprised at how strong – and how fast – some of these heady roadsters can be. The rules are pretty simple:

Peep this RED HOT entry into last year's Glass Vegas Boro Derby from Steller Glass!

The car must be made using “hot glass” techniques, it must be no more than 6.5” tall, 3” wide, 10” long, and cannot weigh more than 18 ounces… oh, and the best part… it must be able to function as a smoking device, not just a racecar.

Boro Derby is definitely a spectator sport and just another awesome sight to see at Glass Vegas this year. Perhaps the crowning portion of this badass event, though, is the annual World Series of Glass held at the Glass Vegas Expo.

This year will witness some of the absolute best and most highly sought after glass artists compete in categories including Solo, Collab, Millie, and Pendant. Last year’s winners were:

@LaceFaceGlass, @DrakkenGlass, @RummelGlass, @gl_asshole in the Solo Category presented by @OxygenFrog | @JKellyGlass & @JoePGlass, @EmilyMarieGlass & @LaceFaceGlass, @Kristianmerwin, @Hicdogg & @Ravendesigns , @GlassicalCreations & @Licit in the Collab Category presented by @USTGlass | @EON_Glass & @Stephen_Boehme, @GabrielJHodges & @Ryan_Mccluer & @MichaelMcCluer, @StrobelGlass in the Millie Category presented by @KateBurners | @TrapperStudio, Piper Dan, @Ford20_Glass, @PaulTaylorGlass in the Shot Glass Category presented by @CannaClean.

You know that Disorderly Conduction pulled up loaded with everything that a true glass aficionado may need to complete and protect their immaculate collection including the industry-favorite PeliNail e-Nail as well as an unrivaled selection of genuine, American-made Pelican Cases. We came to crush, not to merely “break even”. Find us at the show at B1213 and try to keep up with us if you can at the afterparties 😉

Glass Vegas is closed to the general public, but wholesale and retail buyers and related media are encouraged to register to attend. It’s Vegas, bro, you can be here tonight. Do it.
